Inferences and Implications

Even with the great victory given to us by the Green Bay Packers, morning does come and the serious issues facing the U. S. continue.  Dr. Rand Paul, Senator from Kentucky, mentioned in my previous blog, presents specifics to help the country out of its deficit hole which threatens our very life styles and certainly that of our children and grandchildren.   Today, however, I want to focus on the health care reform  (also a deficit “maker”) recently declared unconstitutional by a federal judge.  Without quoting any text from articles or editorials I have collected, readers can come to conclusions or inferences just from the titles: “Tyranny By Decree” ( January 3, 2011 ); “The Aspirin Tax, Obamacare Raises Revenue By Undermining Preventive Medicine” (January 5, 2011); “Best Health Care Political Pull Can Buy” (January 6, 2011); “Proviso Cut from Medicare Rules” (January 6, 2011); “False Projections and Other Threats” (January 16, 2011); “Call the Health Vote” (January 22, 2011);  ”Passing Obamacare Was Theater and Repealing is the Reality Show” (January 23, 2011); “An Obamacare Appeal from the States” (February 7, 2011).  It is possible to become informed on most issues and I suppose, in addition, I am implying that one should do that.

Simply labeling the events as contrasting doesn’t really describe the differences.

December 19th, in the city square of Minsk, protesters gathered to express their beliefs that the recent reelection of the Belurusian President Alexander Lukashenko was a farce.  Independent election observers backed their stance.  Lukashenko, who heads the government of Belarus, is sometimes called “Europe’s last dictator”.  Within 24 hours, seven of nine opposition candidates were arrested, beaten, and imprisoned. The misery of these freedom lovers desirous of a fair election was not widely reported in the United States, however, a reader can find information about these suffering people and their continued oppression.

Move on to January 5th in Washington, D. C., and the swearing-in of our democratically elected senators and congressmen.  Trygve (my son) and I stood in one of two quiet lines at the Senator Office Building on the cold day awaiting security clearance.  Our names were on a list and obviously cleared beforehand.   No protesters, no beatings, no arrests.  We simply walked to the Ron Johnson reception room and later the Dr. Rand Paul reception room. We met with other like-minded folks who were thankful for the opportunity to watch an event that truly celebrated the fairness, goodness, and justice of our form of government.  Two newly elected U. S. Senators, not career politicians, were and are ready to serve and protect the Constitution.

The influence of language

I suppose I “muse” about many things.  This oft repeated truth from an English professor at UWRF when I was a student, however, has really been on my mind since the advent of the Obama administration. Dr. Francis Chisholm said with conviction and knowledge,   “Remember, the map is not the territory.” One has to think about the sentence to realize its importance.  A well known pundit on “60 Minutes” said that “Language is more important than math.”   I suppose that statement underscores Dr. Chishom’s contention.  Exactly how does this fit into my musings about the present Administration?  For them terrorism is a “man-caused disaster,” “a global Islamic insurgency,” “an overseas contingency operation”; illegal aliens are simply “undocumented citizens”; it’s not “global warming,” but “global climate disruption”.   Why do you suppose one would manage the language?  It would seem obvious that words, like elections, have consequences.
